From the Mobile RegisterClose doesn't count for FHS Lady PiratesFairhope girls soccer gets chance, but can't find net enough in playoff loss to Auburn Monday, May 09, 2005 By DAVID LEE Sports Correspondent FAIRHOPE -- Fairhope's girls soccer team was all around the net in their second round playoff contest with Auburn here Saturday evening at Fairhope Municipal Stadium but couldn't seem to get the ball into the goal, bouncing a few shots off the post during the contest. That hard luck eventually cost Fairhope the game as the Lady Pirates dropped a 4-1 decision to Auburn, giving the Lady Tigers the opportunity to advance on to the Final Four in Huntsville for the second straight season. The Pirates lost 2-0 here early Saturday evening to Prattville as the Lions used an aggressive offense to keep Fairhope on the defensive for most of the game. Prattville improves to 16-5-4 with the triumph and will be headed to the state tournament for the second year in a row while the Pirates see their season end at 22-5-1. The Lady Pirates responded with a 12-2 victory over visiting Baker in the first round of the AHSAA Class 6A girls soccer playoffs at W.C. Majors Field. "We told our girls to come out here and bring their best game -- never underestimate an opponent, whoever it may be -- and we saw that Baker really gave us their best from the beginning," Alford said. Just guess right. Pearson's saves on two of McGill-Toolen's five penalty kicks gave Fairhope a 2-1 shootout win over the Yellow Jackets at Archbishop Lipscomb Park on Tuesday and sent the seventh-ranked Pirates into a second-round matchup with Prattville at W.C. Majors Field on Saturday at 4 p.m..
"I'm just watching where they line up and hoping I guess right," Pearson said of a shootout situation. "I'm not expected to stop them, so there's no pressure. I convince myself it's not me, it's them making a mistake. I just guessed right twice and got lucky." Majors Field Tuesday evening. "Amazing. Five goals," Fairhope coach Tim Alford said. "Lauren Marsh played so unselfishly. If you look at her assists, she was looking to give the ball to other people to score.
"We told our girls to come out here and bring their best game -- never underestimate an opponent, whoever it may be -- and we saw that Baker really gave us their best from the beginning. In overtime, he stopped a few more. Any one of them would have ended the Pirates' season. But he still had two more big saves to make. Pearson stopped two McGill-Toolen shots in a shootout while his teammates buried all four of their attempts as seventh-ranked Fairhope advanced to the second round with a 2-1 win over No. 8 McGill-Toolen. "I'm just watching where they line up and hoping I guess right," Pearson said of a shootout situation. "I'm not expected to stop them, so there's no pressure. I convince myself it's not me, it's them making a mistake. I just guessed right twice and got lucky." More... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the Mobile Register Fairhope, McGill-Toolen clash in opener tonightTuesday, May 03, 2005 By MIKE HERNDON Sports Reporter As first-round high school soccer playoff games go, it won't get much better than Fairhope against McGill-Toolen. They are the Mobile-Baldwin area's only boys' teams ranked in the top 10, where Fairhope is No. 7 and McGill-Toolen No. 8. Both are 21-4-1. So what are they doing playing each other in the first round? Fairhope's 1-0 double-overtime win over 6A Section 2 rival Daphne two weeks ago left it one goal shy of clinching first place in the section, as Daphne had won the teams' other regular-season meeting 2-0. A 3-1 Fairhope win over the Trojans in an early tournament did not count toward the section standings. And so, as the Alabama High School Athletic Association soccer state playoffs open around the state tonight, the area's two top-ranked boys' soccer teams will play each other at 7:30 p.m. at Archbishop Lipscomb Park. The teams met twice in the regular season, with Fairhope winning 3-2 in an early season tournament and the teams tying 1-1 on a late McGill goal. "It's always a battle when we play McGill," said Fairhope coach Eddie Strachan, who led the Pirates to the 5A state finals last year. "A lot of these guys have played together (in the summer), so we have a real good, friendly rivalry." Strachan believes the key tonight will be the play of the midfield, where the Pirates have been improving with the return of Dan Keyser and other key players who had missed time early in the year with injuries. That will complement an offense led by Strachan's son, Ryan, who leads the team with 43 goals after earning Register All-Metro player of the year honors with 60 goals last season. On the girls' side, in 6A No. 7 Fairhope will entertain Baker at 6 p.m. and No. 8 McGill-Toolen will play host to Daphne at 5:30 p.m., just before the McGill-Fairhope boys' game; St. Paul's will be at home against Sylacauga at 5 p.m. in 5A; and Bayside Academy plays host to No. 8 Catholic-Montgomery at 6 p.m. in 1A-4A. Tonight's winners will advance to second-round play on Saturday, when they can earn a berth in the state tournament on May 13-14 in Huntsville. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the Mobile Register Bayside girls, Fairhope and Daphne boys and girls soccer squads go on the hunt for Huntsville Tuesday, May 03, 2005 By DAVID LEE Sports Correspondent Baldwin County soccer will be well represented when the state playoffs get under way today. Three girls teams -- Bayside Academy, Fairhope and Daphne -- and two boys teams -- Daphne and Fairhope -- will be in the hunt for a trip to the Final Four in Huntsville. In girls action, Bayside (currently 16-8) is hosting a playoff game in Class 1A-4A, as the Lady Admirals will take on Catholic of Montgomery at 6 this evening. "They placed second in their section," Bayside coach Pat McTaggart said of Catholic of Montgomery. "They have a very experienced and fast team from what I've heard. What we need to do is lock down on defense, mark their scorer tightly, shoot offensively and get the rebounds. We need to let our scorers do our job." While Caroline Reehl (30 goals this year) and Sara Senkbeil (25 goals this season) have provided most of the offense for the Lady Admirals in 2005, McTaggart said that unsung heroes like Jennie Hawthorne and Ann-Brook Hodgson have also been doing their share. "We always seem to get the job done when we need to," said McTaggart, talking about his team's offense. "We haven't had to rely on our main scorers this year and we've had others besides just Caroline and Sara putting in a goal for us when we needed it. We're also looking to get a strong performance from our goalie, Corrina Ray, in the game. She's played well all season for us." Meanwhile, Fairhope -- the winner of its section -- will welcome Baker at 6 p.m. at Volanta Park, while Daphne will hit the road to take on McGill-Toolen at the Archbishop Lipscomb Complex at 5:30 p.m. In boys action, Daphne (the winner of its section on a tiebreaker) will host Davidson at 7 p.m., while Fairhope will travel to the Archbishop Lipscomb Complex at 7:30 p.m. for a matchup with McGill-Toolen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the Mobile RegisterFairhope wins section titleLady Pirates score 4-3 come-from-behind win at Daphne on Friday Monday, April 25, 2005 By ROBERT LADNIER Sports Reporter DAPHNE -- The Fairhope girls captured the 6A Section 2 soccer championship with a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Daphne at Trojan Stadium on Friday afternoon. More... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the Mobile RegisterPirates Shut Out Daphne 1-0Saturday, April 23, 2005 By ROBERT LADNIER Sports Reporter DAPHNE -- Ryan Strachan buried a penalty kick into the left corner of the net in the second sudden-death overtime period to lift No. 6-ranked Fairhope to a 1-0 soccer win at No. 10-ranked Daphne Friday night. "It was a great victory," Fairhope coach Eddie Strachan said. "I would have liked to have come out with a two-goal win so we could have won the section, but Daphne is a tough team. It was obviously two very evenly matched teams. We fought hard. We went 86 minutes and hung in there."
The Pirates improved to 21-4-1 overall, 9-1 in 6A Section 2 and will travel to McGill-Toolen in the first round of the 6A playoffs on May 3. The Trojans fell to 17-5-2 overall and 9-1 in the section, but won the section title on a tie-breaker due to a 2-0 win in Fairhope earlier in the season and will host the Section 1 runner-up.
"Give Strachan a second PK chance and he's going to put it in and that was the difference in this game," Daphne coach Rick Andrew said. "We are both great teams and both deserve to go to the playoffs. It would be great to see both of us in the final four."
The game, which was played in windy conditions and delayed for about 10 minutes in the second half due to lightning, was a defensive struggle from the start. Strachan had a penalty kick blocked with 7:43 left in the opening half by Trojan goal keeper Kyle Irion, who made several impressive stops during the contest.
The game remained scoreless throughout regulation play and the first five-minute overtime session before Strachan scored 46 seconds into the second overtime. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the Mobile RegisterWansley's 19 Seconds Puts FHS on TopSaturday, April 23, 2005 By ROBERT LADNIER Sports Reporter DAPHNE -- Bethany Wansley scored back-to-back goals within 19 seconds of each other late in the first half and the ninth-ranked Fairhope girls held on for a come-from-behind win in the section championship game against 10th-ranked Daphne. "They've just got character," Fairhope coach Tim Alford said. "They are not going to let themselves be defeated by a one- or two-goal deficit. They came back and played an excellent game, and I really admire their character."
The Lady Pirates improved to 17-5 overall, 10-0 in 6A Section 2 and will host a first-round playoff game on May 3. The Lady Trojans dropped to 20-5 overall, 8-2 in section play, and will travel in the first round.
"We are a good team; they are a good team," Daphne coach Steve Morisani said. "I don't know if the better team won tonight, but both teams came to play. That was a good game."
Katelyn Gillespie scored on a direct kick only 2:22 into the contest to give Daphne a 1-0 lead. Wansley fed the ball to Baley Murphy, who scored at the 17:32 mark as Fairhope tied the game 1-all. With 8:27 remaining in the opening half, Mandie Martin split three defenders in front of the goal and sent the ball past the keeper for a 2-1 Lady Pirates lead. With 5:02 to go, Caylee Bander scored a goal as the Lady Trojans tied the game at 2. Wansley scored a goal on an assist from Martin with 3:54 left in the first half, then quickly added her second goal on an assist from Lauren Marsh as Fairhope took a 4-2 lead into the intermission. Gillespie scored her second goal of the contest at the 26:49 mark of the second half to close the gap to 4-3. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the Mobile RegisterFairhope girls get win over RHSThursday, April 21, 2005 Staff Report Fairhope senior Bethany Wansley scored two goals to lead the Lady Pirates to a 6-0 win at Robertsdale in prep soccer action Tuesday evening.
