Pirates Boys tie Enterprise 2-2 but miss Southern Shootout finals

Bay Minette, AL -- Ah, the drama of the nitty-gritty details. Fairhope played Enterprise to a 2-2 draw on Saturday morning, but failed to advance to the Final game. The gritty play that's becoming the standard from Pirate forwards Ryan Strachan and Jordan Sinclair continued in this game as each put a point on the board. In the first half midfielder Brian Keyser played a ball towards the corner to Sinclair who beat one defender and placed the ball side net inches inside the back post. Not to be outdone by his partner in crime, Strachan took Sinclair's pass through three defenders, took five years off of the Enterprise coach's life, and slid the ball by the keeper for the score. To their credit, Enterprise followed each Fairhope goal with one of their own.

Now the nitty-gritty. Fairhope and Enterprise each ended round play with two wins and a tie. Each team was awarded 22 points. So, they tied in points. But someone has to advance to the Finals. So, the tie breaker was, "who won in head-to-head competition?" Well, duh, they tied. The second tie breaker was, "who gave up the fewest goals?" Well, they tied here, too. Each team gave up three goals. The third tie breaker was, "who scored the most goals?" Enterprise had the edge here 14-10, so they advanced to the Finals where they beat Auburn 1-0. Congratulations to the Enterprise team, their coaches and their fans.

Side notes: Fairhope's defense played extremely well again. Most notable to your humble correspondent was the sudden emergence of a fifth gear in Ben Kuyk's gear box. Thought to have only four gears, Kuyk put a burst of speed to nail a Enterprise attacker on a breakaway saving keeper Steven Pearson from a dangerous one-on-one situation. And two Fairhope players found a new, higher octave as well and may be joining the Vienna Boys Choir at the end of the season.

End note: Fairhope ended the tournament with more goals scored (22) than any other team in the final four (Enterprise - 15, LAMP - 10, Auburn - 4).
