v. Foley on 3/17/6

Pirates flatten Foley 15-1

Lions forgot to wear green

Foley, AL - The luck of the Irish was not with Foley High School Friday night as the Fairhope Pirates boys and girls varsity teams combined for convincing wins at Foley Stadium. The lassies found the back of the net six times and the laddies pounded Foley as six Pirates found the net on the way to a 9-1 victory.

Senior co-captain Jordan Sinclair scored first in the 3rd  minute off of co-captain Ryan Strachan's through-ball. Two minutes later Strachan was mugged in the box and Sinclair converted the PK. (No arrest warrants were sworn-out as of press-time.)

In the 14th minute Tim Canarela connected a through-ball to junior Drew Dolan (right) for the score. Five minutes later junior Stanton Lee found Strachan for some juk and jive and net. Count to 120 and the Pirates ring up another on a Brian Keyser-to-Lee-to-Strachan-to-keeper-to-Strachan ping-pong score. The first half ended with Fairhope on top 5-0 and reserves holding down the fort.

The second half opened with the same mostly-reserves squad on the pitch for the Pirates. Reserve keeper Steven Ard make a leaping save to deflect a hard shot off of the cross bar, only to have an alert Foley striker chip the ball into the goal. The deflection appeared to many Fairhope faithful to also have deflected off of the pointy-ball cross bar 18" above the true-football cross bar, but none of the equine-striped officials agreed, and the goal stood.

That play ignited the Pirates and in the 26th minute Sam Nokovich (left) passed to Lee who danced through two defenders before burying the ball in the net. Count again, this time to 180 and Drew Barnet played what may have been the best pass of the night through defenders to hit a streaking Lee who dodged, shot, and scored.

Three minutes before full time Nokovich found Barnett for the point and with 60 ticks on the clock Allen crossed to Ricky Harris to close out the scoring.

The Pirate defense was a virtual lion cage with strong play from senior sweeper Ben Kuyk, junior defenders Sam Miller and David Anderson and freshman stopper Nathan Haywood. Starting keeper Steven Pearson was not challenged.

Fairhope is now tied with Robertsdale for the lead in the 6A Section 2 race with three wins and no losses. The Pirates face Montgomery’s #4 ranked Trinity Presbyterian’s Wildcats at noon on Saturday at W.C. Majors Field at Fairhope Municipal Stadium.
