v. Gulf Shores on 2/14/6Pirate Boys Swim to a 1-1 Draw with Gulf Shores Dolphins
Orange Beach, AL -- In a rain drenched match on Tuesday night the Fairhope Boys Varsity team sporting new bright yellow jerseys, fought 80 minutes with a tough Gulf Shores team to end even at full time. Junior Stewart Garner put the Pirates on the scoreboard in the 5th minute with a curling direct kick from 25 yards out. A line substitution put nine Fairhope reserves on the field for the last 20 minutes of the first half where junior Stanton Lee and sophomore David Allen had some good combination play, but could not penetrate the Dolphins back line. Steven Ard, starting in the place of injured first team keeper, pushed Gulf Shores back time and again with soaring punts. In the 27th minute a squib shot by Gulf Shores Carlos Cavalcanti wiggled by a boatload of Pirates and found the back of the net to knot the score at one apiece. The first half ended with the aquatic mammals at a distinct advantage due to high waves and rising tides. The second half saw the return of the Pirate first team and junior midfielder Frank Sutley worked his corner and presented several opportune balls into the middle, but did not connect with any yellow shirts. Senior sweeper Ben Kuyk kept the Pirates in the game repeatedly shutting down the Dolphin attack. Jordan Sinclair watched in amazement as two blistering left-footed shots found the top post, but no net. And despite a flurry of last minute attempts, the Pirates had to settle for a tie and a wet ride home. The boys outshot the Dolphins 18-6. This page was last updated 10/31/08 |
