Boys Roster

Tuesday 4/11/6

On Tuesday, April 11th, the Fairhope Boys JV soccer team defeated McGill-Toolen 6-0 at W.C. Majors Field in Fairhope. With this victory over the Yellow Jackets the JV Pirates’ overall record improved to 11-0-1. Riley Garvin scored two goals for the Pirates as did Kyle Sherrin.  Blair Lowell and Kevin Hickman each scored one. Goalkeeper Eric Wintzell presided over the shutout.

So far this year the JV Pirates have scored 52 goals while giving up only five. In the 11 Fairhope JV victories, eight have been shutouts.

Tuesday was a big win for our players. McGill-Toolen consistently has one of the best overall soccer programs in the southern half of Alabama. As such any win over McGill is something to be proud of.

The JV Pirates will finish their season on Monday, April 17th, against Daphne. The match will be played at W.C. Majors Field at 6:30pm.

Wednesday 4/5/6

The Fairhope Boys JV Soccer team defeated Robertsdale 4-0 at Robertsdale to improve their overall record to 10-0-1. Freshman Kyle Sherrin earned a hat trick with three goals. Kevin Hickman also scored a goal. Goalkeepers Eric Wintzell and Tyler Malugani presided over the shutout.

Sherrin’s hat trick was his second of the season, the first came against Foley on March 17th.  Wednesday night’s shutout is the seventh match in which the JV Pirates have held opponents scoreless. So far this season, the Pirates have scored 46 goals while giving up only 5.

We played a good game Wednesday night especially early in the game. Next week we have St. Paul’s (April 10th) and McGill (April 12th) at home. Then the day after Easter we host our season finale against Daphne on April 17th.

Wednesday 3/29/6

The Fairhope Boys JV soccer team came from behind to defeat Robertsdale by a score of 2-1 and improved its record to 9 wins, 0 losses, and 1 tie.

The first half of the Pirates and Bears match-up was scoreless. Midway through the second half Robertsdale took a 1 to 0 lead with a goal off of a corner kick. Shortly thereafter Pirate midfielder Riley Garvin tied the game with a goal from the field.  Late in the game Alden Harold scored the game-winning goal with a header off of a corner kick.  After Harold’s goal the JV Pirates held on defensively and finished with a 2 to 1 victory.

The game was a real test for us. For the second game in a row we had to come from behind to avoid a loss. Against Daphne we had to settle for a tie. Fortunately against Robertsdale we were able to squeeze out a win. Robertsdale’s goalkeeper Eric Wilson played an outstanding game and he had our offense quite frustrated.

Monday 3/27/6

The Fairhope JV Boys battled with the Daphne Trojans JV Monday night in a struggle that ended in a 2-2 tie.  Daphne brought hustle and the ability to kick the ball far downfield with them. The match featured many strong challenges and tough play by both sides. This game marked the first time that the JV Pirates have trailed this season.

Daphne scored first on a PK after Eric Wintzell, making a good 1 on 1 attempt on the soccer ball, collided with a Daphne player as the ball deflected out of bounds and was called for the foul. A few minutes later David Allen hustled to the corner and crossed a ball to Jamason Cherrix to even the score at one. Daphne regained the lead when a Daphne player managed to find himself 5 yards behind the last defender signaled for the ball and a teammate obliged which lead to the score. Fairhope responded minutes later when Kyle Sherrin tapped in the rebound of a David Allen shot.

As usual with Daphne and Fairhope, it was a hard-fought match in which no team ever achieved dominance.  The tie, as such, was indicative of the relative equity between the teams that night. Kudos to Lucas Boone who spent most of his night chasing down the long balls played by Daphne. With the tie, the JV boys preserved an undefeated record, bringing it to 8-0-1

The goal differential for the JV Pirates stands at 40 made and 4 given up.

The JV Pirates will be in action again on Wednesday night (March 29) against Robertsdale at W.C. Majors Field in Fairhope.  Beyond Wednesday, remaining scheduled games for the JV boys are Robertsdale (April 5), St. Paul's (April 10), McGill-Toolen (April 12), and the season-finale against Daphne on April 17.

Friday 3/17/6

St. Paddy's Day brought the luck of the Irish, err...Pirate to Foley's Ivan Jones Stadium as the JV boys notched victory number eight on the season.

Every Pirate saw plenty of action and contributed to securing shutout number six. Again, Eric Wintzell and Ty Malugani shared the the keeper duties and handled the few attacks on goal with ease.  Every player deserves a pat on the back for their effort.  \Stopper Blair Lowell was solid as a rock, again. The Boone boys and Austin Polczynski kept the ball out of the defensive zone and made possession passes to midfield.

Striker Kyle Sherrin started the scoring on his way to a hat trick. Moments later Jamason Cherrix added goal number two with Blair Lowell providing his second assist of the game. At the 15 minute mark, Sherrin notched the game's third goal on a free kick from 25 yards. Many of the starters took a seat to allow the reserves well deserved game time. No sooner had the players hit the field than Noah Rand stole a ball from the Foley defense and hammered an eighteen-yard shot for goal four. Coach Mark Leavins made sure every player saw plenty of field time the entire game and kudos to coach Leavins for that.

The second half saw a brief return of the starters. Three minutes in Jamason Cherrix received a ball from the Pirate defense and turned to see Kyle Sherrin moving to space. Cherrix played the ball to the open space and Sherrin took it from there finishing the run with a left footed shot bending just inside the near post. At the eight minute mark Sherrin found space through the middle and challenged the defense. When the defense collapsed, Sherrin spotted a streaking Kevin Hickman, played a ball to space and Hickman finished the job with a super shot to the far post. The starters gave way to the reserves and while possession was very good with several major attacks on goal, no more shots found the net and the game ended a 6-0 victory for the Pirates.

The JV record goes to 8-0. Next up is Bayside Academy on Saturday March 25 at 1:00 p.m. at Bayside. The following Monday will be Daphne (away) at 6:00 p.m. and on Wednesday March 29, a home game (Majors Field) against Robertsdale at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday 3/15/6

The Fairhope Junior Varsity Boys returned to action tonight after a long layoff during which they savored their championship at the Buccaneer's Bash.  But enough of that, bring on the next opponent.

The Gulf Shores Dolphins JV were guest of the Pirates at Founders Park and the host sent them swimming back to Gulf Shores with a strong 6-0 victory. Fairhope took control from the opening kick when striker Kyle Sherrin decided to test his dribbling skills and run through the defense only to see the Gulf Shores keeper make the first of several very nice saves on the evening.  Riley Garvin followed the procession moments later only to see his shot sneak high over the crossbar.

After fifteen minutes in which the boys maintained possession for 80% of the time, Drew Amond showed everyone where the ball needed to go and sent home the game's first goal on a low shot to the keeper's right. Minutes later Blair Lowell played a ball wide right to Shawn Hall who played a one touch pass to Kyle Sherrin sliding through the middle of the defensive formation and Sherrin hit a one touch ball curving around a defender and in the back corner of the goal. Minutes later, Justin Bunch played an early ball to the left corner for Kyle Sherrin who nutmegged one opponent and blew past another and with keeper expecting a cross Sherrin hit a low burner that gave the keeper no time to react and tallied his second goal of the night.

The second half started much the same with Fairhope maintaining possession. Ten minutes into the second half, after receiving a pass from Riley Garvin, Kyle Sherrin sent a cross to the box and midfielder Jamason Cherrix was waiting to finish the job with a touch goal. Stopper, Blair Lowell provided a strong effort, all night, leading the counter attacks and maintaining offensive pressure. He was rewarded for the effort by scoring on a PK with 15 minutes remaining. The final tally brought the best possession of the night with 6 players touching the ball played from inside our 18 to the foot of Leon Wynne at the opponent's 12 where Wynne sent home the goal... well done gentlemen!

JV Coach Mark Leavins was a little worried prior to the game. “Gulf Shores was our first opponent since the Buccaneer Bash in late February. I was concerned that we would play flat, but instead our kids responded with an efficient game. Lucas Boone, Brock Boone, and Austin Polezynski were three of our defenders who had an excellent game.”

The final stats saw Fairhope take 16 shots to Gulf Shores 2. Ty Malugani and Eric Wintzell combined for the fifth shutout of the season. Fairhope has allowed two goals this season while scoring 32. On field efforts of Blair Lowell, Brock Boone, Kevin Hickman, Shawn Hall and a host of others contributed to the Pirate victory and those efforts are acknowledged by all of the FHS fans.

The JV Pirates play Foley on Friday the 17th.  On March 25th, Fairhope visits Bayside, and on the 27th, the Pirates travel to Daphne to take on the JV Trojans

Saturday 2/25/6

On Saturday, February 25th, at W.C. Majors Field, the Fairhope Boys JV Soccer team defeated Mountain Brook’s JV, 3-1 to win the junior varsity championship in the 2006 Buccaneer Bash.  Tyler Malugani, Lucas Boone, J.J. Cherrix, and Riley Garvin were the four Pirates named to the JV All-Tournament Team. In addition, Riley Garvin was chosen as the JV Tournament MVP.

Prior to Saturday’s championship game, Fairhope defeated UMS 5-0 on Friday afternoon. Later that night, the Pirates defeated Davidson 3-1, earning Fairhope a number one seed in Saturday’s JV elimination rounds. On Saturday morning Fairhope defeated Robertsdale 4-0, thus giving the Pirates an opportunity to play Mountain Brook on Saturday afternoon.

Mountain Brook’s path to the championship game began with Friday victories over Bayside and Robertsdale.  On Saturday, Mountain Brook eliminated UMS-Wright, setting up the showdown with Fairhope.

The first half of Saturday’s championship game ended with Fairhope and Mountain Brook knotted 1-1. In the first half, J.J. Cherrix scored Fairhope’s goal. Additionally, Fairhope gave up only its second goal of the season in this half. In the second half, the game remained tied until around 5 minutes left in the game. Riley Garvin broke the tie on a penalty kick, putting the Pirates ahead 2-1.  Shortly after the PK, Kevin Hickman sealed the game and the championship with a goal from the field.

In the Fairhope game against UMS-Wright, David Allen, J.J. Cherrix, Riley Garvin, Kevin Hickman, and Drew Amon each scored a goal. Nate Vosicky preserved the shutout. In the Davidson game, J.J. Cherrix, Leon Wynn, and Riley Garvin each had a goal. Against Robertsdale, David Allen and Leon Wynn each scored one, and Shawn Hall scored two. Tyler Malugani gave up only two goals during the tournament.

So far, the JV Pirates are 6-0-0 for the season, with four wins coming in less than 24 hours at the Buccaneer Bash. To this point, Fairhope’s JV players have scored 26 goals while giving up only two.

The Buccaneer Bash was a great opportunity for our JV kids.  They played hard and they learned to persevere when they were physically and mentally exhausted. I couldn’t be prouder of them. Hopefully, this tournament experience will serve as a good foundation for the rest of our season. Also, I would like to congratulate Mountain Brook for the success that they had in this tournament.

Monday 2/20/6

The FHS Pirate JV boys defeated Foley again by the score of 5-0.

Monday 2/13/6

The FHS Pirate JV squad opened their 2006 season with a nice 6-0 victory at Majors Field over Foley.  The boys gave a good effort for the first game of the season. Alden Harold led off the scoring with two goals in the first half with Kyle Sherrin providing the assist on both. There were several near misses and the Foley keeper managed some nice saves the remainder of the first half. The second saw Kyle Sherrin tally two goals very early in the period. Bo Clark sent one to the back of the net at the 25 minute mark and Leon Wynn finished the scoring on a nice pursuit of a deep pass with about ten minutes remaining assisted by Kevin Hickman. Compliments to the defense and midfield for a solid effort to secure the shutout.

Foley JV girls forfeited.
