4/25/9  JV Boys Beat Bayside, Crowned Baldwin County Champs

The Fairhope JV Boys won the inaugural Baldwin County JV Soccer Tournament with a 2-1 win in the finals over Bayside Academy on Saturday afternoon at Volanta Stadium.  The tournament started Wednesday evening with Fairhope defeating Foley 4-0.  Thursday evening’s action saw Robertsdale upend Foley 2-1, and Bayside shut out Baldwin County 3-0.  Friday evening Baldwin County and Robertsdale played to a 1-1 draw before Fairhope downed Bayside 2-0 in the last preliminary game.  Standings in the preliminaries were based on points, with the top two teams advancing to the finals.  At the end of Friday’s action, Fairhope had 19 points, Bayside 10, Robertsdale 9, Baldwin County 2 and Foley 1.

In Fairhope’s match against Foley, Ben Studstill opened the scoring by heading in a corner kick by Jonathan Smith.  Later in the first half, Jacob Ard fought through two defenders before driving a shot at the keeper.  Riley Tart cleaned up the rebound for the goal and a 2-0 halftime lead.  In the second half, Tart struck again, and Ard collected the final goal of the evening. Fairhope’s Friday night match challenged a stout Bayside defense anchored by keeper Hayden Dees. The Pirates Jacob Ard started the scoring off in the first half as he broke in on the right side and laid a ball back to a charging Tart.  Tart tucked the ball in the far post for the 1-0 lead.  In the second half, Alex Tobon got a step on the right side and chipped a 25-yarder just over Dees reach for the 2-0 halftime lead. The Pirate back line of Jack Andrade, Barrett Sinclair, Colin Byrne, Will Allen and Ben Studstill made the lead hold up for the 2-0 victory.

The Saturday finals once again saw Fairhope strike first. Smith made a great run down the left side and turned a service back to a charging Ard. Ard pounded the service in the right side for the 1-0 lead. Bayside answered 5 minutes later when Garrett Hilton collected a long ball over the top and beat keeper Eddie Adams with a drive to the far post. Fairhope answered to regain the lead 4 minutes later with Lans Stallings driving a shot just inside the right post from 25 yards out. The Pirate defense stiffened throughout the second half and held on for the 2-1 victory. Adams and Forrest Huhn, as they had all season, presided over the victory in goal.  Fairhope ends its season with a 16-1 record, scoring 58 goals and giving up just 10.

3/23/9 JV Boys Muzzle Foley 4-0

The JV boys silenced a rowdy Foley crowd with a 4-0 beat-down on Monday night.  Jonathan Smith (left) set the tone in the first two minutes taking a hard blow from the Foley keeper while heading home a 1-0 lead. Ben Studstill claimed the assist with a nice service in from near midfield.

Riley Tart added a second goal with a nice break-away on a Lans Stallings service with about 5 minutes remaining in the first half. Studstill got back on the score sheet 7 minutes into the second half by one-timing a cross from Smith and beating the keeper to the far post.

The Pirates closed out the scoring when Jacob Ard (right) got tackled from behind on a break away, resulting in a penalty kick. Despite a late hit from the Foley keeper on the play, and cat-calls from the stands, Ard made it count on the score board, burying his PK in the right corner.

Jack Andrade and Barret Sinclair anchored the back line which held Foley to only two shots all night. Eddie Adams and Forrest Huhn combined for the shutout in goal.  The boys are now 11-1 on the season and will be back in action against Robertsdale on Thursday. More game photos here.

3/19/9  JV Boys Defeat Daphne 1 - 0

The JV boys are now 10-1 for the season following a 1-0 win over Daphne on Thursday night at Majors Field.  Several missed chances and a couple of nice saves by the Daphne keeper kept the Pirates to a scoreless tie at the half.  Continued pressure in the 2nd half resulted in a corner kick from the left side by Jonathan Smith with about 10 minutes gone.  Ben Studstill got a head on Smith's service and nudged it home for the game winner - and a nice birthday present for himself.  The Fairhope defense held tight the rest of the evening, with Eddie Adams and Forrest Huhn hanging on for the shutout in goal. The boys visit Foley on Monday evening.

3/5/9  JV Boys Swat Yellow Jackets 4-2

The JV Boys drew sweet revenge on McGill tonight with a 4-2 victory at Founders Park.  The Pirates had two great looks at goal in the first half, but a nice save by the McGill keeper and a shot off the crossbar kept the score knotted 0-0 at the half.

Fairhope controlled the play to start the 2nd half, and 5 minutes in Riley Tart ripped a shot off a Jonathan Smith assist to put the Pirates up 1-0. Jacob Ard then collected a service from Lans Stallings and increased the lead to 2-0. Less than 2 minutes later Ard got his second goal of the night with a driven ball to the right corner. Brandon Landau closed out the Pirate scoring by charging in on a corner kick by Stallings and heading it into the upper left corner.  McGill answered with a goal with 7 minutes to play to cut the lead to 4-1, and tallied their final score with just 3 seconds left.

The win brings the JV boys record to 9-1 on the season. They take a week long break from competition and then return to the pitch on March 16th against Baldwin County. Game photos here.

3/2/9 JV Boys Beat Daphne 2-1

The JV Boys improved their record to 8-1 with a 2-1 win over Daphne on Monday.  Jonathan Smith put the Pirates ahead in the first half after Riley Tart served to the near post and Jacob Ard deflected a shot off a Daphne defender.  Smith was waiting at the far post to tuck the ball in the corner for the 1-0 halftime lead.

Daphne responded 45 seconds into the 2nd half by capitalizing on a Fairhope defensive lapse. A 25-yard shot to the far post drew the game even at 1-1. Fairhope came back with constant pressure for the next 5 minutes. A free kick from 30-yards out on the right flank by Ben Studstill found Ard inside the 6 for the game winner with 26 minutes to play.  The Pirates kept up the attack, but a sterling effort by the Daphne keeper held off the onslaught.  Fairhope outshot Daphne 16-5 for the game, and clearly held the advantage in time of possession.  Eddie Adams held Daphne scoreless in goal for the first half, and Forrest Huhn accounted for three saves in the 2nd half.  The Pirates are back in action Thursday at home against McGill.

2/17/9 JV Boys Defeat UMS 2-1

The JV Boys upped their record to 5-0 on Tuesday with another tough victory.  UMS-Wright came to town in the first game of a triple-header.  The Pirates got out to a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick.  Jonathan Smith made a great run on the left wing and drove a cross toward the center, but a Bulldog defender knocked it down with his arm resulting in the free kick.  Jacob Ard put away the PK.  UMS returned the favor after a defensive lapse in the Pirates end allowed an attacker in unopposed to tie things up 1-1 at the half.  Despite tired legs from the previous nights game with McGill, Fairhope stepped up the pace in the second half and had far more opportunities.  With 8 minutes remaining, Ben Studstill broke in on the right wing and found Ard wide open in front of the net.  Ard one-timed the ball in for the deciding goal and the 2-1 victory.  Eddie Adams and Forrest Huhn both played well in goal, despite giving up their first opponent goal of the season.  The boys will be back in action on Friday evening in the Buccaneer Bash tournament.

2/16/9 JV Boys Sting McGill 1-0

The JV Boys improved their record to 4-0 with a tough 1-0 victory over McGill-Toolen at the Lip on Monday night.  A back and forth battle throughout the contest saw a scoreless first half.  The Pirates continued to work the wings and had several opportunities in the second half.  Finally, with 5 minutes to play, Jonathan Smith sent a throw-in behind the McGill back line and sprung Brandon Landau in unopposed.  Landau put away the game-winner past a sprawling Jackets keeper.  The Pirate defense again played a great game, holding their fourth straight opponent scoreless.  Eddie Adams and Forrest Huhn both had great halves in goal, and teamed up for the shutout.  The boys play UMS on Tuesday at Volanta. 2/12/9 JV Boys Tame Baldwin County 7-0

The JV Boys improved to 3-0 with a 7-0 win over Baldwin County High School at Bay Minette on Thursday.  Riley Tart and Jacob Ard combined for four first half goals to put the Pirates comfortably ahead at the half.  The Tigers managed only a single shot on goal, that coming off a first half free kick.

The Pirates opened the 2nd half with continued pressure on the BCHS end, with Jack Andrade, Barret Sinclair and Will Allen each adding a goal.  Alex Tobon added two assists, while Jay Kasper, Tito Rodriguez and Sinclair each added one.  The Pirates outshot BCHS 12-1 on the night, with Eddie Adams and Forrest Huhn combining for their third shutout.  The boys return to action on Monday night against McGill at the Lip. See game photos here.

2/10/9 JV Beat Murphy 2-0

The JV Boys soccer team improved to 2-0 with a 2-0 shutout win over Murphy  at Cottage Hill Park on Tuesday night. Riley Tart headed in a corner kick from Jonathan Smith in the first half, and then put away a Will Crowe service for the second goal midway through the 2nd half.  The defense held Murphy without a shot on goal, giving Eddie Adams and Forrest Huhn an easy night in goal.  The boys return to action at Baldwin County on Thursday night.

2/9/9 JV Boys Down Foley 5-0

The Pirate JV boys opened the 2009 campaign with a 5-0 victory over visiting Foley at Founders Park. Jacob Ard led the offense with 2 goals, one to open the scoring midway through the first half, and a second off a free kick in the second half. Ben Studstill headed in a rebounded corner kick for a 2-0 lead at halftime. Riley Tart and Lans Stallings

each added goals in the second half. Tart, Stallings, Walker Richardson and Brandon Landau each had an
