4/19/10 Boys Wrap Up Season 17-0 With Win Over Daphne The JV Boys wrapped up a 17-0 regular season with a 3-1 win over Daphne in the season finale Monday at Volanta. Tyler Martenstein started the scoring early, heading home a service from Barret Sinclair off a set piece just three and a half minutes into the game. The Pirates played a great game of possession throughout the first half, but weren't able to find the net again until just over two and a half minutes remained. Sinclair took a free kick from about 40 yards out with the keeper up off his line. Sinclair's ball was just over the keeper's hands for a 2-0 halftime lead. Halfway through the second half, Tito Rodriguez made a run up the left side, looked to the goal to draw in the defenders, and then laid off a perfect cross to a charging Nate Gillespie, who drove home the final Pirate goal. Daphne got on the board with about 9 minutes to play with a knuckling free kick that deflected off keeper Grant Coley. Next up is the County JV Tournament at Bayside Stadium at 8:15 pm on Thursday against Gulf Shores.
3/29/10 Ugly Betty Shows For Fairhope 3-1 Over BCHS Ugly, but a win's a win. The JV Boys picked up another victory on Monday night in Bay Minette, but not without effort. The back of the BCHS net was an elusive target, as the Pirates unleashed 32 shots, but only found paydirt 3 times. Adding to their frustration on the night, Fairhope yielded their third goal of the season on a breakaway with about 8 minutes to play in the first half. Tyler Martenstein got the Pirates on the board first, collecting a service from Tito Rodriguez and beating the marking back on the right side before finishing a low hard drive through the keeper's hands. Nate Gillespie followed at the 18:15 mark, taking a throw from Ross Hensler on the right side, beating three defenders and putting the Pirates ahead 2-0. Baldwin County answered with their breakaway goal to leave it 2-1 at the half. Fairhope settled down in the second half and controlled possession, frequently finding runners in the seams on the Tiger's back line. Rodriguez notched the Pirates third and final goal 13:43 into the second half after a Nick Cutrone throw-in bounced through the box to the back post. Left unmarked, Rodriguez tucked a right footer into the back of the net. The boys now stand at 15-0, and take a long break until next Monday when they play at Robertsdale.
3/24/10 Boys Outshoot Gulf Shores 24-1 on the way to a 4-0 Win The JV Boys continued their strong season with a 4-0 win over Gulf Shores on Wednesday night at Volanta. Jacob Trawick started things with a goal just a minute and a half into the game by collecting an errant pass on the left wing, driving to the net and beating the keeper far post. The Pirates maintained a substantial advantage in time of possession, and uncorked 13 more shots, but were unable to find the net for the rest of the half. The second half started like the first, when Alex Tobon won an attempted clear by the Dolphins, beat two defenders and buried the second goal just 52 seconds in. Seven minutes later, the Pirates had back to back corner opportunities. On the first, a defender held Tyler Martenstein down, but out of the eye of the referee, for a non-call. On the second, a rebounded shot was caught by a defender, and Martenstein made good on the ensuing penalty kick. With five minutes to play, Saunders Allen hit a nice cross to a streaking Pierce Bufkin for the final Fairhope tally. The Pirates outshot the Dolphins 24-1, with Grant Coley collecting one save and his 12th shutout on the season. The boys are now 14-0 and return to action Saturday morning against UMS at Volanta.
3/22/10 Boys Win Ugly Over Baldwin County The JV boys continued their winning ways with an ugly 3-0 win over Baldwin County on Monday night. Playing impatiently and too direct, the boys struggled to find the back of the net. The Tigers offered some help in the form of an own goal to open the scoring. An attempted clear by a BCHS defender was shanked backward over the unsuspecting keeper with 23 minutes left in the first half. Colin Davis came on the field for the Pirates moments later to finally get the boys a goal of their own. Olmali Najera served a nice corner kick from the right side that Davis cleaned up and drove to the left side of the net with 15 minutes left in the half. Nine minutes late Tito Rodriguez found Davis open in a channel in the Tiger back line. Davis drove in on the keeper and beat him with a low drive to the right. The boys settled their play in the second half and moved the ball well, but failed to finish anything, keeping the 3-0 scoreline to the end. Fairhope outshot BCHS 18-1 on the night, and Grant Coley picked up his 11th shutout of the season. The boys stand at 13-0, and take on Gulf Shores on Wednesday evening at Volanta.
3/17/10 JV Boys Sink Bayside 7-0 The JV Boys continued their winning ways with a 7-0 shutout of Bayside Academy on Wednesday evening at the Hwy 64 complex. Nathan Gillespie got the Pirates on the board 2:38 in with a penalty kick following a foul for a push in the back. The Pirates stayed in the Bayside half of the field for the next several minutes but were unable to crack the defense. Olmali Najera finally broke through with an unassisted drive at the 11:15 mark. Just a minute later Najera found Jacob Trawick open on the left side, and Trawick beat the keeper near post to put the Pirates up 3-0. A handling foul in the box at the 20:00 mark brought Will Crowe to the line, where he drove home the PK. Colin Byrne then gathered a ball on the left wing, drove past two defenders and served Tito Rodriguez about 20 yards out. Rodriguez beat the keeper to put Fairhope up 5-0 going into halftime. The Pirates struck twice from the corner in the second half, the first coming after 9 minutes had passed. Najera found Nick Cutrone on the back side where he headed home the Pirates sixth goal. At the 20 minute mark, Trawick was the server and hit Ross Hensler at the top of the six for the Pirates final goal. Grant Coley and the back line offered no opportunities to the Bayside attack, as Coley recorded his 10th shutout of the season. The Pirates improved to 12-0, with 48 goals scored and just 2 allowed. The boys are back in action on Monday at home against Baldwin County.
3/15/10 Boys Roll Over Robertsdale 7-1 The JV boys continued their roll this season with a 7-1 taming of the Robertsdale Bears on Monday at Volanta. Welles Richardson opened the scoring 4 minutes in taking a nice service from Olmali Najera and beating the keeper far post. Nick Cutrone followed suit 9 minutes later heading in a corner kick from Jacob Trawick. Cutrone got some serious air on the play, heading the ball down from about six inches above the crossbar. Will Crowe was next on the board for the Pirates. Ross Hensler sent Richardson through with a service up the right side. Richardson hit a pretty cross to Crowe standing all by himself in front of the goal. Crowe's one timer put Fairhope up 3-0, a lead that would hold through halftime. The Pirates wasted no time getting back on the board in the second half, with Tyler Martenstein getting up to head in a free kick by Barret Sinclair with just four minutes gone in the second half. Some miscommunication in the back allowed Robertsdale to avoid the shutout with a goal 12 minutes into the second half. Fairhope quickly responded with a cross from Kyle Roth to Cutrone at the far post. Cutrone's header put the Pirates up 5-1. Najera collected an unassisted goal just one minute later after gathering an attempted clear and hitting a nasty bender into the right side. Martenstein came back with another header for the final goal, this time off a free kick from Najera. The 7-1 win puts the boys record at 11-0 on the season. They'll return to action on Wednesday evening against Bayside Academy at the Highway 64 Complex in Daphne.
3/11/10 Boys Raid the Fort The JV Boys improved to 10-0 with a 3-0 win over Spanish Fort on Saturday at Volanta Stadium. Jacob Trawick opened the Fairhope scoring with a one-timer from the left side after collecting a pass from Olmali Najera. The 1-0 score stood through halftime, before Welles Richardson ran onto the end of a Nick Cutrone service and beat the Toro keeper for a 2-0 lead. Richardson collected the final goal of the match with an unassisted run that he tucked into the left corner of the net. Grant Coley recorded his 9th shutout of the season in the win. The JV Boys play Robertsdale at home on Monday.
3/10/10 Boys Drop Foley 1-0 The JV boys notched another win Wednesday night with a 1-0 win over Foley at the Hwy 98 complex. Nick Cutrone garnered the lone Pirate goal just seven and a half minutes into the match. Jacob Trawick sent in a corner kick from the right side, and Cutrone drove it home.
The Pirates had several other opportunities, including 2 penalty kicks, but failed to beat an athletic Foley keeper. Grant Coley was solid in goal again, collecting his 8th shutout of the year as the JV boys moved to 9-0-0 on the season. They're back in action on Saturday at Majors Field against Spanish Fort, with kickoff at noon.
3/8/10 Boys Shut Out Daphne 3-0 The JV boys improved to 9-0-0 with a 3-0 win over Daphne at Trojan Stadium on Monday night. Olmali Najera opened the scoring with a nice left footed shot from 20 yards out that found the upper left corner of the Daphne goal. Ross Hensler got on the scoring line with about 7 minutes to play in the first half with a great individual effort. He collected a ball on the back line and started up the right touch line. After faking a cross to draw the defender inside, Hensler drove the right wing before delivering a right footed ball that hooked just inside the far post over the keeper's outstretched hands. The Pirates took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Twenty minutes into the second half, Welles Richardson beat a pair of Daphne defenders just above the box, then chipped the charging keeper for the 3-0 lead. The defense remained solid all night, with no real strong opportunities for Daphne, and notching Grant Coley's 8th shutout on the season. The boys travel to Foley on Wednesday for a 6:30 PM game at the Hwy 98 complex.
2/24/10 Boys Win Big Chill Over McGill As the JV Boys made their way out of the stands to warm-up for Wednesday night's game, a McGill parent commented "You don't think you can win here tonight, do you?" The reply was "I like our chances," but as always, playing at the Lip is an adventure. A small but raucous crowd struggled to understand much of what happened on the field. Numerous 5 and 10 yard penalties were assessed, though none of the yellow hankies that normally accompany those penalties were seen. The coaches searched for that elusive combination on the field that could find the back of the net, but it appeared the cold would be the only winner. In the end, the boys put on an entertaining game with a great finish for Fairhope. The first half saw several opportunities for both sides, but the keepers kept a clean sheet on each end. The second half opened with McGill pressing the attack and Fairhope seeming to be on their heels for most of the half. Several lineup changes were tried, but each failed to produce the offensive spark needed. Finally, with 4 minutes to play, the tide shifted and Fairhope moved to a sustained attack. A free kick from 40 yards out by Barret Sinclair with just 45 seconds left in the game found Nick Cutrone outside the six on the far post. Cutrone headed the ball back to the left where Alex Tobon drove home the game winner. Grant Coley was strong in goal for the Pirates, recording his 6th shutout as the team moves to 7-0-0 on the season. The boys take a long break until March 8th when they face off against Daphne in an away match.
2/20/10 Boys Win Buccaneers Bash Tournament The JV Boys recaptured the Buccaneer Bash crown after an absence of a couple of years. The boys swept the tournament allowing no goals while tallying 12. The boys opened the tournament with a Friday afternoon match against Ben Russell. Welles Richardson opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a shot from the right side that caught the keeper standing. The boys patiently knocked the ball around probing for an opening until the 27th minute when Will Crowe put one away to give Fairhope a 2-0 halftime lead. Colin Davis finished the scoring with a tally in the 45th minute, beating the keeper near post just before the ball went out of play right of the goal. Ross Hensler, Nick Cutrone and Jonathan Smith each had an assist in the game. Fairhope outshot the Wildcats 12-5, with Grant Coley recording the shutout. The Pirates were back at it in the 9:30 nightcap against Davidson. The boys struck early and often, with Smith opening the scoring in the 11th minute, Richardson in the 14th and 21st minutes, and Will Crowe rounding out the scoring just before the half. Patience and possession was the name of the game in the second half with the boys repeatedly switching the attack from side to side, eventually drawing out the Davidson attackers. Once they pressed forward, Fairhope pressed forward again, with Colin Byrne tallying in the 54th minute, followed by a great run and finish up the left side by Nathan Gillespie in the 60th minute. Crowe found the net again in the 64th minute to close out the 7-0 win and advance the Pirates to the finals. The back line was rock solid, allowing no shots on goal, while the Pirates put 16 shots on the Davidson frame. Lans Stallings collected two assists, while Jacob Ard, Gillespie, Olmali Najera, Barret Sinclair and Tito Rodriguez each recorded one. Fairhope faced off against Grissom in the boys finals Saturday afternoon. Coley came ready to play, turning away two quality shots in the first 10 minutes of the game. Tyler Martenstein just missed from the right side about 6 minutes into the game, and despite several more opportunities, the Pirates were unable to find paydirt in the first half. The second half opened with a spirited attack from Fairhope, with numerous runs down the wings. Jonathan Smith broke in on left wing in the 43rd minute and sent a cross to Ard standing about 15 yards out. Ard chested the ball down and turned to volley a hard shot right through the hands of the unsuspecting keeper. Possession continued to dominate the Pirate play until the 62nd minute when Najera served up a corner kick that Cutrone headed just under the crossbar at the back post. The 2-0 score stood to the end, enabling the Pirates to reclaim the Buccaneer Bash title. On the game, Fairhope outshot Grissom 13-5. Barret Sinclair was named tournament MVP for his outstanding defensive play. Joining Sinclair on the All-tournament team were Jonathan Smith, Lans Stallings, Welles Richardson, Ty Martenstein and Nick Cutrone. The boys now stand 6-0-0 and return to action Wednesday at home against McGill.
2/17/10 Boys Drill Foley 4-1 The JV boys improved to a 3-0-0 record with a sloppy 4-1 win over Foley on Wednesday night at Majors Stadium. The Pirates took an early gift from Foley when a defender was whistled for a handling foul in the Foley box. Will Crowe put away the penalty kick for a 1-0 Fairhope lead just 30 seconds into the game. In the 16th minute, a Grant Coley punt was headed on by Crowe toward the Foley end. The Foley keeper came out of the box, then realized he couldn't field the ball and tried to turn to recover the ball as it passed him. Alex Tobon slid in and tapped the ball in for a 2-0 lead. The Pirates then settled in to playing a lot of long ball, failing to control the tempo of the game, and allowing several runs by the Foley strikers. Solid play by the back line averted any scoring opportunities by Foley, but the Pirates also failed to mount any sustained attack. The second half opened with better possession by Fairhope. Several opportunities on the flanks were turned away by the Foley defense and the visitors finally saw an opportunity. A run down the right wing in the 55th minute produced a cross that just found the inside of the far post, and bounced in to cut the lead to 2-1. The Pirates got back on the attack, and a great run by Tyler Martenstein on the right side yielded a corner kick for Fairhope in the 62nd minute. Jacob Trawick served a ball to just outside the 6 that Martenstein headed in for the 3-1 lead. Just 5 minutes later, Olmali Najera chipped a ball ahead for Nathan Gillespie pressing the Foley back line. Gillespie chipped the ball past the charging Foley keeper for the 4-1 final score. Coley and Sean Boyer combined in net for the victory.
2/9/10 Boys Thaw St. Paul's 2-0 The JV boys improved to 2-0-0 with a victory over St Paul's on a wet, cold, windy night in Mobile. Early success was almost the Pirate downfall, as the boys controlled the possession and had numerous opportunities in the first 15 minutes. That early success led to a too direct attack over the balance of the first half which was easily thwarted by St Paul's. Frustrated, the boys headed to halftime with the score knotted at 0-0. Patience and possession marked the start of the second half, and in the 40th minute Will Crowe delivered a nice cross to Tito Rodriguez for the goal and a 1-0 lead. Just four minutes later Rodriguez served an open Jacob Trawick to put the Pirates up 2-0. The Saints stepped up their pressure, but the Fairhope defense held again. Grant Coley collected two saves on the night enroute to his second shutout of the season.
2/8/10 Boys roll Davidson 8-0 The JV boys opened their 2010 campaign with a decisive 8-0 victory over Davidson. Taking about 10 minutes to find their rhythm, the Pirates jumped to a 4-0 lead at halftime. Will Crowe opened the scoring with a nice header at the back post. Tito Rodriguez struck next with a 25-yarder buried in the upper right corner. Welles Richardson beat the entire right side of the Davidson squad on a 70-yard run and appeared poised to take on the keeper near post before deftly laying off a cross to Kyle Roth at the back post for the easy finish. Richardson was back moments later to collect his first of 3 goals on the night. The second half opened with an early corner kick for Fairhope, with Nick Cutrone putting a head on an Olmali Najera service to put the boys up 5-0. Crowe was back at it with another tally to make it 6-0. Richardson followed going far post from the right side to make it 7-0, and then chipped a charging Davidson keeper for the hat trick and an 8-0 lead. Richardson also collected two assists, along with two for Najera and one each for Tyler Martenstein and Colin Davis. The defense was rock solid, allowing no shots on goal and giving Grant Coley an easy night in net. The boys tallied 19 shots on the night and move on to tackle St Paul's on Tuesday. |
