Cap Undefeated Season With Wins Over Baker and Daphne

JV Boys Win Battle of the Bay

JV Boys capped an undefeated season over the weekend by bringing home the Battle of the Bay JV tournament trophy. Tournament play began last Tuesday with JV teams in Baldwin and Mobile county competing for the top two spots in the semi-final brackets. In the first round game on Tuesday, Fairhope tied Daphne 1-1. The Pirates advanced to the early semi-final game on Saturday as the #1 seed with wins over Foley (3-2) and Spanish Fort (9-0) on Wednesday and Thursday. Semi-finals opponents on the Mobile side were St. Paul's (#1) and Baker (#2).

In the semi-final match on Saturday morning, Fairhope jumped out to an early lead against Baker posting three goals in the 1st half. Baker rallied in the second half with two goals. Fairhope defenders held on to the lead until the game ended. Daphne defeated St. Paul's in their semi final round and thus sealed the battle for the championship as a match up between the two top Baldwin County teams.

Early in the final game against Daphne, Fairhope’s first goal was a header by Kolby Gordon off a corner served by Colin Davis. Daphne answered with a goal within ten minutes of play. Raneil Brooks found the net again before the half ended. Fairhope defenders maintained the lead throughout the second half to seal the championship for the Pirates.

JV Girls End with Draw with McGill

The JV Girls closed out their 2011 season with a 2-2 draw with McGill on Thursday evening at Volanta.  A hard-fought, physical match saw the teams battle through a scoreless first half.  Both teams had a couple of good looks at a goal, only to be denied by the defense closing them down.  Fairhope drew first blood in the second half with Breanne Jones fighting off two defenders the entire way on a 30 yard run before beating the keeper inside the right post.  The Pirates kept up the pressure and drew a corner kick with 22 minutes remaining in the half.  After McGill cleared the kick over the end line, Hannah Williams put the next corner over the keeper's outstretched hands and deflected off a McGill defender to put the Pirates up 2-0 with 21 minutes remaining.

The Pirates held steady until just over 6 minutes remained.  McGill then caught a loose ball in the Pirate box and switched to the back side for an open goal to close to 2-1.  Three minutes later McGill found the equalizer after another cross deep in the Pirate end.  Fairhope got a couple more runs in the last three minutes but couldn't put one away.  The draw closes the Lady Pirates season with a record of 11-2-1, 51 goals scored, 6 goals allowed, and 11 shutouts.

4/12/11 Bears Mauled By Lady Pirate JVs

The Pirate JV Girls mauled the Golden Bears of Robertsdale 8-0 on Tuesday night at Robertsdale. The girls opened quickly with a Blayne Newsome goal just 36 seconds into the match.  Breanne Jones followed in the 10th minute to put the Pirates up 2-0.  Baylynne Williford added a score 8 minutes later, with Jones adding her second of the night with 10 minutes remaining in the half.  Anne-Riley Green tucked a cross just inside the right post to put the Pirates up 5-0 with 9 minutes to play in the half.

Amy Keyser put the Pirates up 6-0 at the half with a run up the left wing off a Hannah Williams through ball.  Keyser struck paydirt again 8 minutes into the second half with a driven ball from the left wing after an attempted clear by Robertsdale.  Green followed 3 minutes later to put the Pirates up 8-0.

The girls put 18 shots on goal for the match, while Beth Tuttle collected five saves in recording her 11th shutout of the season.  Rachel Kornegay had one assist on the evening, and Keyser added two assists to her two goal night.  The girls now stand at 11-2 on the season, and close out their campaign at home on Thursday against McGill at 5 PM.

4/7/11  JV Girls Shut Out Robertsdale

The JV Girls extended their record to 10-2 with a 4-0 shutout of Robertsdale at Volanta on Thursday night. The girls jumped to a 2-0 halftime lead with goals by Breanne Jones and Baylynne Williford, with Cassidy Wainwright picking up an assist.

Robertsdale held tough in the second half for over 20 minutes before Wainwright broke through to put the Pirates up 3-0. Anne-Riley Greene closed out the scoring with about 8 minutes remaining when her cross from the right side carried over the keepers outstretched hands in tucked just inside the far post. The back line was rock solid again, allowing only 3 shots on the night, while the Pirates took 16 shots. Beth Tuttle recorded her 10th shutout of the season. The girls return to action next Tuesday when they visit Robertsdale at 5 PM.

3/28/11  JV Girls Whitewash Gulf Shores

The JV Girls improved to 9-2 on the season with a 4-0 whitewash of Gulf Shores on Monday evening.  Breanne Jones opened the scoring in the 10th minute beating the keeper to her left.  Rachel Kornegay followed suit 15 minutes later with a left footer that tucked just inside the far post.  Hannah Williams put the Pirates up 3-0 for the half with a break-away up the left side and then beat the keeper inside the right post.  Jones was back at it 13 minutes into the second half catching the Gulf Shores back line high, and beating them in on a well-played through ball.  Kornegay added an assist to go with her first half goal.  Fairhope's Beth Tuttle was perfect in goal for the ninth time this season, including a great one-on-one save midway through the first half.  The Lady Pirates outshot the Dolphins 9-4 on the evening.  The girls travel to Robertsdale on Wednesday evening.

3/24/11   JV Girls Blank Foley 2-0

The JV Girls upped their record to 8-2 on the season with a 2-0 blanking of Foley on Thursday evening.  The girls came out with a lackluster performance in the first half, impatiently knocking long balls and unable to build a decent attack.  Beth Tuttle was strong in goal and held the Lions in check through the first half while the Pirates got their game legs.  The second half saw a different team on the field, as Breanne Jones finished a cross from Anne-Riley Green just 1:35 into the second half.  Five and a half minutes later, Green served another cross to the back post that was headed out front by Baylynne Williford, and then knocked home by Jones.  Several more opportunities presented themselves, but the Pirates weren't able to tally another score.  The girls are back in action on Monday at the Orange Beach complex against Gulf Shores.

3/17/11   Lady Pirates Defeat Daphne 5-0

Thursday March 17th saw the girls back in action in Daphne at Jubilee Stadium. Thoroughly controlling the tempo didn’t count for much in the first half, as the Trojans held the Lady Pirates scoreless. It seemed like there would be more of the same in the second half before the scoring finally started. Blayne Newsome laid a long free kick in the box that deflected off of a Daphne defender and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Baylynne Williford followed another free kick in about 8 minutes later to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Frances Blount knocked one in from about 25 yards on another set piece, before Cassidy Wainwright finished two more goals in the last five minutes for the 5-0 final. Anne-Riley Green accounted for one assist. The Pirates out shot the Trojans 19-2, as Beth Tuttle recorded another shutout. The Pirates now stand at 7-2 and will face Foley in Foley on Thursday 24 March.

3/16/11  Lady Pirate drop Foley 3-0

The girls were back in action on March 16th against Foley at Volanta. Breanne Jones got her first hat trick of the season with one first half goal, and two in the second half. Blayne Newsome recorded an assist. The Pirate defense was rock-solid, allowing on 3 shots on the night, versus Fairhope’s 13 shots. Beth Tuttle recorded her 6th shutout of the season in goal.

3/11/11   Baby Pirates Take Bash - Huge OT Win Over Grissom

In classic Buccaneers Bash tournament style the Fairhope Pirate Boys JV team won the tournament Saturday in overtime 4-3 over a very skilled Grissom squad. Controversial PKs awarded to both sides added to the drama of this exciting match.

With 28 seconds left in the match and Fairhope down 3-2, a hand ball in the box call against Grissom sent the Pirates to the PK mark where they cashed in to tie 3-3 and send the game into Golden Goal overtime.

Three minutes into the first overtime Dylan Brewer (#30 at left) scored off a header on a corner kick for the tournament championship. Rushing Watson (#34 below) was named tournament MVP. More details to come. Watch the full game on demand here.

Many thanks to Wells Wilson for the super soccer photography. View all of Wells' photos from the tournament here and here.

Chosen from the Lady Pirates JV squad for the All Tournament team were Baylynne Williford, Frances Blount and Daphne McClure.

3/11/11   Lady Pirates in Buccaneers Bash

The Lady Pirates met defending champion Sparkman in the opening round of the Buccaneer Bash. The teams battled to a scoreless tie until about 7 minutes remained in the second half. Sparkman found an open striker on the back post with a cross from the right wing to put the Senators up 1-0. With less than 10 seconds remaining in the game, a hard foul leveled Max Ledson in goal, leaving her on the ground with a separated collarbone and an open net. Sparkman put the ball away following the non-call for a 2-0 victory. The Pirates rebounded with a 2-0 decision over Alma Bryant in the second round, on the strength of goals by Anne-Riley Green and Breanne Jones. Holly Williams accounted for an assist. Beth Tuttle supervised the shutout in goal. In the Pirates final match of the tournament, the girls pinned a 4-0 loss on Spanish Fort. Jones led the way with 2 goals, while Baylynne Williford and Williams each added one tally. Green and Williams each had an assist. Tuttle again kept the clean sheet in goal. The win put the Pirates season record at 5-2.

2/24/11    Lady Pirates Beat Daphne 3-0

The JV Girls rebounded from their Monday loss with a 3-0 win over Daphne on Thursday night at Volanta.  Hannah Williams netted a goal in the 27th minute to put the Pirates out front for good.  Frances Blount added a second goal with a coast to coast run, dodging about 6 defenders along the way.  Holly Williams rounded out the score with an unassisted goal in the final minutes.  Beth Tuttle and Max Ledson each presided over the Pirate goal for a half to earn the shutout.

2/21/11   McGill Tops Pirates 2-1

The JV Girls dropped a 2-1 decision to McGill Toolen on Monday night at the Lip.  The Pirates jumped to a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Darian Hill eight minutes into the game. Less than a minute later, the Yellow Jackets tied it up after the girls failed to clear a ball from the defensive third. A cross about 8 minutes later was left bouncing in the box and ended up being the deciding goal. The first half was an impatient brand of ball, with too many hurried passes and not nearly enough possession.

The second half saw a much more settled attack, with the girls holding the ball quite a bit more and patiently playing to feet. Hill, Breanne Jones and Amy Keyser all got good looks in the second half, but none were able to connect for the tying score. Max Ledson and Beth Tuttle both had great games in goal for the Pirates. The vast improvement in play from the first to the second half provides some optimism for their next match against Daphne at Volanta on Thursday evening. The girls' record now stands at 2-1 on the season.

2/15/11  Girls Beat BCHS 3-0

It was ugly, but a win is a win.  The JV girls headed to Bay Minette on Tuesday and came back with a 3-0 win to up their season record to 2-0.  A corner kick from Holly Williams with about 10 minutes remaining in the first half found Darian Hill open in front for a header that put the Pirates up 1-0 for the half.  The small field (54 yards wide versus the 72 yards the night before) seemed to frustrate the girls as much as the aggressive defense by the Tigers.  Maintaining possession and keeping the field spread proved to be a challenge all night.

The team seemed to settle down a little in the 2nd half, but still struggled with maintaining tempo and possession.  Hill connected for two more goals in the 2nd half, one 20 minutes in and the other with 4 minutes remaining.  Beth Tuttle and Max Ledson again oversaw the shutout.  The back line, while clearly off their game a little bit, nonetheless only allowed one shot on goal off a free kick from just outside the 18.  Ledson had made a nice save on the only attempt by the Tigers.  The team will be back in action on Monday at the Lip, playing McGill Toolen.

2/14/11 Girls Shutout Davidson 10-0

The JV girls opened their 2011 campaign with a 10-0 shutout of Davidson on Monday night at Volanta.  The girls struck early and often, jumping to a 3-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game.  Three more goals in a span of a minute and 20 seconds had the Pirates up 6-0 with 14:35 remaining in the first half.  Two more tallies before there were 10 minutes left in the half put the girls in possession mode.  The knocked the ball around through the end of the half and for the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half, working on positioning on the field, switching the ball away from pressure, finding seams in the opposing defense and recognizing opportunities to build the attack from the back.

Two more tallies in the second half, the last with 6:13 remaining on the clock brought the game to an early conclusion.  Darian Hill led the offensive onslaught with five goals, including the first goal of the season off a nice cross from the right wing by Anne-Riley GreenBreanne Jones added three goals and Holly Williams two.  In addition to Green's assist, Cassidy Wainwright and Blayne Newsome added assists.  The back line was rock solid all night, allowing no shots on goal.  Alexis Hempfleng, Frances Blount, Laiken Larsen, Daphne McClure, Ashland Augustine and Williams all contributed on the back line.  Beth Tuttle and Max Ledson supervised the shutout from in goal.  The girls are back in action on Tuesday night at BCHS.
